Yipee!! Winter is GONE and it is time to wake up the Accord!!

Spring greeting to all garden supporters! We will be opening the garden this year and celebrating Earth Day on Thursday, April 22nd from 1:00 - 3:00 PM. We had a lovely group of volunteers committed to work in the garden at this time and it is Earth Day so it seemed a good idea to switch the volunteer session time. My apologies to anyone that this inconveniences but join us if you can because we have work to do but there is always something for everyone at any age or ability to do AND we always have fun!Remember, there are no rules -- come for as long as you can, whenever you can, and do what you can -- the garden loves everyone's company! In May we will be back to the third Saturday gathering May 15th from 10 - 12 noon.

We won a FIRST PLACE rating in the Metro Blooms Garden Evaluation last summer! This is huge as this is a Twin Cities-wide evaluation and we are a community volunteer garden. Check out our awards (as well as pictures and other info) on our new bulletin board in the Van Cleve Park building (the board is still under construction so please be patient and a big thanks to the Park for the board space).

The Accord has joined the cyber-age and we now have a fan page on Facebook. Search for "Accord Native Plant Community Garden" and become a fan. Photos, updates, event notices, and more will be there for easy communication. Leave comments and let us know what you think.

Upcoming events for the summer -

  • The Friends School Plant Sale - May 7 - 9. This is a great way to pick up affordable Native Plants for your garden while supporting a good cause.
  • The Earth Day celebration - April 22nd. We will be in the garden from 1 - 3 PM but there will be events all over the Como neighborhood that day. Check out the SECIA website at www.secomo.org for more info.
  • The Parade of Community Gardens - Saturday, August 21st. This is always a HUGE celebration in the garden with summer at full steam and we will do it again this year. We are dreaming of ways to make this an even more special event this year so keep your eyes peeled. It is still early but you will be able to find additional information about this event at www.gardeningmatters.org as the date gets closer.
  • The Como Cookout - Sunday, September 19th. Tons of fun, lots of food, entertainment, and a chance to get in a good visit with neighbors before Winter locks us up inside again.

Watch for possible events with the U of MN Community Liaisons - Date undetermined. We are working to link up with this group to have other activities this summer. The ideas so far are pretty exciting so stayed tuned.

Thanks as always for everything that you do for our beautiful, peaceful garden.

See you in the Accord!
