Earth Day! Updates from the Como Green Village

  • SECIA developed raingarden design consultation program for SE Como properties with Metro Blooms. This augments the training, reimbursement and Service Learning student support we have aligned. We have a goal of installing residential 25 raingardens in the Como neighborhood by 2009 with sponsorship from McKnight and MWMO.

  • University student involvement leaps forward as SECIA hosts 20 interns in the 2008-09 academic year, all working on different Green Village elements, such as promoting WindSource©, biking, composting, community gardens, household waste reduction, air pollution reduction, Como Green Village Day, rain barrels and more.

  • Green Cleaners offered to community at the SECIA office and at community events with support of MWMO.

  • Business rain garden program launched with support to area businesses for rain garden designs developed for their buildings. $1,000 in design cost reimbursement available to up to six Como businesses in 2009.

  • Awarded the Governors Award in Excellence in Pollution Prevention for working on the Good Neighbor Agreements in partnership with local industries ceremony April 30, 2009.

  • Rock-Tenn Community Advisory Panel (RCAP) participation, arriving at a solution in 2008 for their energy needs. Report available in Office.

  • Offered a spring bike tune-up & safety workshop at Van Cleve Park in March 2009

  • Accord garden wins award 2009 from The Minnesota State Horticultural Society (MSHS) recognized Rose and the Accord Native Plant Community Garden by awarding the Community Garden Award -For excellence in community gardening.

  • Recognized by Councilmember Gordon and the entire City Council for environmental programs and achievements in January 2009

  • Pursuing rainwater catchment system for watering Como Corner, MWMO funded design plans.

  • SECIA is a finalist for the MEI Environmental Initiative awards (announced May 2009), for the Energy and Climate Protection category (Solar Thermal Pilot Project).  We are also a finalist in the Natural Resource Protection and Restoration category for Bridal Veil Open Space.

  • Celebration of second annual Como Green Village day celebration on April 18th, 2009. Which included rainbarrel displays and purchase by Como residents of a completed rainbarrel for $15, solar oven display, bicycle auction of used bikes, eco-exchange of used clothing and other items, along with a resource fair of many other environmentally focused groups. Food, refreshments and live music were provided, including jugglers.

  • The Drake’s home, 901 20th Ave, is featured on the 2009 Minneapolis Home Tour (April 2009), including their solar thermal system installed as part of the Southeast Como Solar Pilot Project.
